Who doesn't know the brand La Chiquita, a giant on the world banana market? But few know that its story, which begins in 1899, is one of enslavement of indigenous peoples, corruption, disrespect for democracy, and the irreversible poisoning of the country with pesticides or the financing of terrorist groups. A story in which the violence of the past sheds light on the violence of today. Julia Timmerman's documentary text seeks to answer the question: what must be the state of democracy that allows the rise of a similarly dark empire?

Julie Timmerman:

Film and stage actress (such as in Yves Robert's Mommy's Castle and Scream of the Riots, and Tourists, Oh Yes! Jean-Pierre Mocky), author, founder of the Idiomécanic Théâtre.

Before turning to writing, she worked in theatre directing. In 2016, she wrote the play UN DEMOCRATE, based on the life and work of Edward Bernays, Freud's nephew and founder of PR, which has been regularly performed in France for six years. It has been translated into Spanish and published by the Argentine company Marea, which is also preparing a radio version. She is a member of the Eurodram commission for Italy. The text BANANAS (AND KINGS), about the rise of a banana multinational, which will be performed at the Eat That Frog Festival, is part of the Bureau des lecteurs de la Comédie-Française selection. Its texts are translated into Italian and published in Italy.
